The Input/Gate block has been around since day 1 of the Axe-Fx. However, starting with the Axe-Fx III, it has become an actual Block that you select from the Block Inventory and place on the Layout Grid yourself.

Before this, the Axe-Fx II, AX8, Axe-Fx Ultra and Standard all had the Input/Gate block placed on the grid automatically on the far left of the Layout. It looked like a tall block taking up all for rows on the very left. This represented “Input 1” and was not moveable.

The main purpose of this block is of course to get signal from our guitar into the Axe-Fx. But every Input/Gate block also serves as a Noise Gate at the input stage, as opposed to adding a separate Gate block in the preset.

Keep in mind that the Input/Gate block’s Noise Gate is for trying to stop noise coming directly from the guitar and not really for controlling high gain amps. If your guitar is very noisy due to a bad ground or other issue, this gate may not be too effective if the noise is just as loud as the signal we want – the guitar strings. If it is, you’ll have to fix the guitar, as trying to use a noise gate will gate the noise and the string sound that we want.

The FM3 has both Pre and Post inputs due to its design, and the Pre Input is most similar to the Input/Gate block of the other gear as it has a Noise Gate feature.

On the Axe-Fx III and FM3, the Input block (typically anything other than Input 1) is used to create an “FX Loop” along with an Output block since the FX Loop block from previous gear is not present. See the FX Loop Block page for more on using Input and Output blocks as an FX Loop.

Blocks Guide Description

Input blocks place signals on the grid. To process any input signal, a preset must have at least one Input block.

Every Input block includes a noise gate. All signal that appears at the block is processed by the gate, whether analog, digital, or USB.

Input blocks have a Bypass switch. When bypassed, they behave exactly like a Shunt. That is to say, their Bypass Mode is permanently set to “THRU”. While an Input block is NOT bypassed, it discards signal at its grid input.

On the Axe-Fx III, the Input Instrument Impedance parameter appears on the Input 1 block. This parameter changes the actual analog circuitry of the INSTR input jack to interact differently with your guitar pickups. This recreates the way that some classic effects (e.g. ‘Vibe) “load down” the pickups, causing a change in frequency response. In “AUTO” mode, the impedance is set automatically, based on the first active effect to follow the input. Normally the setting of “AUTO” is best, but you may also select any of the following values. This setting is saved with the channel.

Axe-Fx II

Owner’s Manual Description

Every Axe-Fx II preset includes a “built-in” Noise Gate connected directly to the main inputs. To edit noise gate parameters, press and navigate all the way to the left to select the IN/GATE column at the left of the grid, then press . The Noise Gate is always active but can be defeated by turning the THRESH control fully counterclockwise.

The Noise Gate is a downward expander with dynamic filtering. Any signal below the threshold is reduced by the expansion ratio. This can provide smooth transitions as well as abrupt open/close-style gating.

FX8

Owner’s Manual Description

Every FX8 preset includes a Noise Gate connected directly to INPUT 1 [PRE]. (If you’re running POST ONLY, you’ll need to use a GATE block instead.) To edit noise gate parameters, turn to the GTE page from the FX page of the main menu (aka the Footswitch page).

The INPUT IMP parameter appears on the GTE page, but is not part of the Noise Gate. Instead, it changes the analog circuitry of the IN [PRE] INSTR input jack to alter the way the FX8 interacts with your guitar.

This recreates the way that some classic effects (e.g. Vibe) “load down” the pickups, causing a change in frequency response. The FX8 recreates this effect by switching various (real) resistors and a capacitor in and out of the signal path. Normally you will want to leave this on AUTO, but you may also select any of the available values manually. This setting is saved with the preset.
